Studies on the estimation of general combining ability (gca) and specific combining ability (sca) of the yield component traits of several upland rice and glutinous rice was conducted in garden of Department of Agronomy UGM, Bulaksumur Yogyakarta on February 1994 to March 1995. The component traits studied were plant height, heading date, productive tiller, spikelete number per panicle, percentage of unfilled grain, and 100 grain weight. The plant materials used in this studies were Ayung, Salome, Lusi varieties (glutinous rice) and 533, Mgl, Salumpikit varieties (upland rice) as a parents and all F1 generation of their diallel crosses. Griffing method II was used to estimate the general combining ability and specific combining ability. Those entries were planted in Randomized Complete Block Design with two blocks. Those entries were planted in two rows. Each row consisted of 5 plants in 20 cm spacing, with one seedling per hill. The result of the experiment indicated that Mgl possessed the best general combining ability for productive tiller and percentage of unfilled grain. 533 possessed the best general combining ability for plant height and heading date. And Salumpikit possessed the best general combining ability for spikelete number per panicle and 100 grain weight. Salome x Lusi cross be the good one for 100 grain weight. While plant height on the 533 x Salome, productive tiller on the Mgl x Salome, spikelete number per panicle on the Mgl x Ayung, percentage of unfilled grain on the 533 x Ayung, and heading date on the 533 x Salome
