[Prospect of utilization and development of biopesticides]

The naturally occuring pesticides appear to have a prominent role for the development of nature commercial pesticides not only for agricultural crop productivity but also for the safety of the environment and public health. Plant- derived substances or bioactive compounds have been used a natural pesticides and they were largely abandoned during the era of synthetic pesticides. Although only about 10.000 secondary plant metabolites have been now chemically defined. It is estimated that the total number of bioactive compounds from plants may amount to 100.000 or more. For developing countries, botanical pest control product could address the problem of pest resistance to synthetic pesticides through their alternatives of action and product on opportunity to develop a value added product based on local natural resources. However, there are various impediments to the control of pests using environmentally sound practices. Nowadays botanicals are being frequently recommended for plant protection particularly for subsistence crops in Third World countries. In recent years increasing attention has been paid again to traditional practices of plant protection in small farmer's holdings in developing countries

Salah satu permasalahan yang juga merupakan hambatan yang perlu diperhatikan adalah serangan hama dan penyakit tanaman. Sebegitu jauh penggunaan pestisida sintesis merupakan pilihan utama bagi para petani untuk mengendalikan hama dan penyakit yang menyerang pertanaman mereka, meskipun disadari atau tidak disadari, penggunaan pestisida sintesis berpengaruh negatif terhadap ekosistem pertanian, kesehatan dan lingkungan.
