A field experiment was carried out on sandy clay loam soil of the Study and Research Farm "Peterlauki" of the Faculty of Agriculture of the Latvia University of Agriculture. The aim of the experiment was to test the effect of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization on the grain quality indices of the spring wheat 'Eta'. The results showed that fertilization significantly increased grain yields in the years 2000 and 2001 but in 2002 the effect was small. The grain crude protein content was affected by fertilizer application and by differences of meteorological conditions. Depending on fertilizer rate gluten content varied from 28.6 to 31.9 %, gluten index - from 26 to 31, falling number - from 312 to 340, and gluten hydration ability - from 211 to 221. Gluten content was increased by 3.3% under the influence of growing nitrogen fertilizer rate. Significant influence of meteorological conditions on grain yield structural elements (uniformity of grain, 1000-kernel weight, spike weight, kernels per spike) was found.
