Chromium tripicolinate (Cr sup 3+) and sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) in broiler and layer diets

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of chromium in the form of tripicolinate and/or sodium bicarbonate on the performance of broilers and layers. In the first experiment, a total of 280 one-week male Arbor acres broiler chicks were randomly assigned in four dietary treatments. Each treatment was replicated seven times with ten chicks per replicate. Experimental corn-soybean basal diets containing 200 ppb chromium or 0.4% sodium bicarbonate or the combination of 200 ppb chromium and 0.4% sodium bicarbonate were fed for 5 weeks. In the second experiment 88 Hyline pullets were randomly assigned to four dietary treatments. Each treatment was replicated 22 times with 1 pullet per replicate. The experiment was carried out for 12 weeks from 23-35 weeks of age. Results of experiment 1 showed no ssignificant effect of chromium tripicolinate and/or sodium bicarbonate supplementation on body weight gain, feed consumption, feed efficiency, livability, dressing percentage, blood pH, serum cholesterol and triglycerides of broilers (P0.05). Birds supplemented with sodium bicarbonate had the highest income over feed and chick cost (IOFCCC). The results in experiment 2 showed no effect of the dietary supplementation of chromium and/or sodium bicarbonate in percentage egg production, egg weight, feed consumption, feed efficiency, body weight change and blood parameters (blood pH, serum cholesterol and serum triglycerides) of the pullets (P0.05). Eggs from pullets fed diet supplemented with chromium tripicolinate and/or sodium bicarbonate had significantly thicker eggshell (P0.05). Egg yolk color score was significantly increased by dietary chromium tripicolinate supplementation rather than by sodium bicarbonate (P0.05). IOFC was slightly increased in pullets supplemented by dietary chromium tripicolinate and/or sodium bicarbonate
