Trials were conducted in a field heavily infested with the pathogen, Sclerotium rolfsii to test efficacy of Trichoderma pseudokoningii and T. parceramosum in controlling the damping off disease caused by the pathogen. The efficacy test conducted was done in comparison with the effect of Previcur-N, a chemical fungicide commonly used by Benguet [Philippines] farmers in controlling damping off in cabbage seedlings. The control of the disease was measured in terms of % seed germination and % seedling survival. Two test plants were used, Brassica chinensis (pechay) and Oryza sativa (rice). A completely randomized block design was employed using 1x1 m plots with 4 replicates. Five treatments were done. Results of the field trials show that the chemical control only improved % seedling germination but not % seedling survival. Percent seed germination and seedling survival in Trichoderma-treated plots improved with each cropping. On the third cropping both % germination and % survival were already significantly higher than in control and in treatment with chemical fungicide applied. The number of sclerotial bodies/g dry soil was also significantly lower in Trichoderma-treated plots compared to the plots treated with chemical fungicide and control. Number of sclerotial bodies in control and chemical fungicide treated plots was significantly different from each other. On the other hand, there was very significant negative correlation between number of sclerotial bodies and % seed germination and % seedling survival in Trichoderma treated plots. These results show that Trichoderma has long term control effects since it can significantly decrease the propagules of the pathogen
