IR 68098-B-78-2-2-B-1 was developed and identified as potential variety for rainfed lowland in Region 1. This variety originated from the cross of IR61042-32-2-1-2 and IR60267-PMI-3-1-3-1 through pedigree selection and bulk method. Findings showed that it is a consistent top yielder for three years in Region 1, and has an average yield of 4.78 t/ha, matures at 122 DAP and with an average height of 97 cm. Reaction to diseases and insect pests showed moderately resistant to whitehead and yellow stem borer, while intermediate resistant to blast, bacterial leaf blight and green leafhopper. This variety is very glossy, cohesive, tender, and smooth, hence preferred by consumers and has an excellent (13.3% amylose content) eating quality. IR68098-B-78-2-2-B-1 should not be planted in areas where tungro and sheath blight are problems due to its susceptibility to causal organisms
