Feeding value of sakwa meal (Yautia sp.) as total or partial replacement of corn for growing and finishing diet

Proximate analysis showed that sm [sakwa meal] had 7.67% crude protein as feed basis comparable to corn at 8.5%. On dry matter (DM) basis, crude protein (CP) of sm was 8.98% which is similar to corn (9.66%) compared to cassava meal or camote meal, sm has higher CP. SM replacement of yellow corn at 60% in grower ration, and 70% in finisher ration, reduced the feed cost per kilogram gain of the pig. The effects of sm-based ration in the live weight, carcass yield, backfat firmness score and loin eye area was not significantly different among treatments. Treatment 3, 30-70% sm replacement, was significantly the most tender among the dietary treatments. Total replacement of corn with sm improved the backfat thickness of pigs. Results of the study indicated that pigs fed varying levels of sm as replacement of yellow corn can be used up to 80% in grower and 90% in finisher diet without affecting the overall performance of the animal
