Adaptation of diffused light storage system for potato under mid-elevated conditions
2001
Anon.
A one-ton capacity diffused light storage (DLS) system for seed potato was evaluated in Digos, Davao del Sur [Philippines] to determine its efficiency in comparison with the farmers' traditional storage facilities in the mid-elevated areas. The study investigated and compared as well the findings and results of the technology's performance in the highlands. Based from the single trial conducted, the use of DLS technology in mid-elevated area of Digos, Davao del Sur using the Granola variety has proven to be technically feasible. DLS can make a potato seed break the dormancy within its normal period, or it can either shorten or extend seed dormancy based on what the farmer needs. It was found out that reaching the storage temperature of 20 deg C will shorten its dormancy. However, temperature of 30 deg C and up will result to a corresponding percentage of rotting and weight loss. The higher relative humidity in any case possible had proven to be beneficial in preventing unnecessary weight loss and tuber rotting. With these initial findings, the technology seemed to be comparable with the significant findings, experiences and viewpoints of its users in the highlands
