A total of 191 Milyang 23/Akihikari recombinant inbred lines (RIL) were cultivated and the panicle weight (PW) and leaf and stem weight (LSW) in main stem were investigated at International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines during dry season in 2002. The samplings were carried out, a total of six times from heading to after 35 days with one week intervals during the ripening period, and the transitions of dry matter production (DMP) were evaluated. The quantitative trait loci (QTL)s for PW and LSW were detected in the ten chromosome regions. Among them, the region on the short arm of chromosome 1 was quite unique. This region was clustered by some large QTLs for both PW and LSW and considered including one QTL associated with spikelet number per panicle from the results of previous reports. Moreover, these QTLs in these region were characterized by the dynamic changes of the effects that were observed in the middle of ripening period, especially 14 days after heading. These changes might reflect the genetic differences of the ability between Milyang 23 and Akihikari about the translocation of assimilation products from leaf and stem into panicle and the source side ability such as the accumulation of non-structural carbohydrate in culm and leaf sheath. More detailed studies should be conducted to clarify these genetic factors using isogenic lines introgressed the target chromosome region
