Field estimation on nitrogen fixation of bush and pole snapbeans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) using the Ureide technique

Field experiments were conducted in La Trinidad, Benguet [Philippines] during dry season, 1998 to assess the nitrogen fixation activity of 14 bush and 19 pole snapbean varieties. Nitrogen fixation activity was determined by the ureide technique. The relative ureide levels (RUI) varied among varieties with values ranging from 15.76-40.58% and 20-37% for bush and pole snapbeans, respectively. These varieties were also noted to have different nodulating abilities. The presence of native rhizobia was also noted in uninoculated plots and formed comparable number of nodules as the inoculant strain. The composition of the xylem sap of bush snapbeans was significantly influenced by the treatment applied. Inoculated plants had higher relative ureide content than plants which were fertilized with chicken manure. The chicken manure fertilized plants had higher relative amino acid content than those inoculated with Rhizobium tropici CIAT 899
