Development of yellow corn germplasm with adequate level of resistance to bacterial stalk rot (Erwinia chrysanthemi) and fungal ear rot (Stenocarpella macrospora)

Bacterial stalk rot (BSR) and fungal ear rot (SER) caused by Erwinia chrysanthemi and Stenocarpella macrospora, respectively are important corn diseases in the Philippines. Developing varieties with favorable reaction to these diseases require resistant germplasm. Using a virulent and prevalent strain of BSR and the stab inoculation method, the authors evaluated approximately 200 elite yellow inbred lines for BSR resistance beginning in the 2001 wet season. After three seasons of evaluation, the project will release four inbred lines- Pi 52, 53, 54, and 55- that have adequate resistance to BSR. Evaluation for SER resistance using corn husk or substrate identified fifteen inbred lines with resistance to ear rot. Evaluation of other lines both for BSR and SER is still on going. The Pi lines together with some CIMMYT Asia (CA) lines that also exhibited resistance will be used to develop broad-based BSR resistant synthetics in the 2003 dry season.
