Efforts in developing QPM [quality protein maize] and high starch corn varieties

Corn is one crop known for its natural wide genetic variability. Its mode of pollination (95 % cross) and genetic system has resulted to the discovery of "special types". These special types include sweet corn, waxy or glutinous corn, popcorn, high lysine, tryptophan corn, also known as Quality Protein Maize (QPM) and those with different forms of starch. The Institute of Plant Breeding, CA-UPLB has been developing breeding materials for these various special corn types. Developing improved cultivars, open-pollinated varieties and hybrids of special corn types such as QPM and high starch corn is one such project. After one year of implementation, the program obtained three promising QPM hybrids that yielded significantly higher compared to IPB 911. One of these hybrids was already entered in the National Cooperative Testing (NCT) for corn. Seed increase and production of QPM hybrids and inbreds are still on going. In the development of higher starch for corn, biochemical characterization of the inbred lines (40 white corn and 40 yellow and special corn types) was done to evaluate and characterize the starch content and amylose quality of the corn inbreds. Results obtained inbreds with higher than 70% starch content, which eventually will be used as parent materials in hybrid development
