Isolation of saponins from Sapindus mukorossi (Retha) and their effect on germination of seeds of sorghum and pearl millet

Fruit of Sapindus mukorossi (Retha) was subjected to phyto chemical screening. Following is a summary of the results. 1. Alkaloids were absent. 2. Saponins, Steroids an Glycosides were present. 3. Flavonids were absent. 4. Anthraquinones were absent. Sdpitidus mukorossi (Retha) was found to contain 30% saponins on dry weight basis. Germination Test Different concentration of crude saponins i.e. 0.25%, 0.5% 0.75% and 1% were used for testing their role in germination of seeds of pearl millet end sorghum. When we compared the seed germination of these treatment with controlled i.e. (distilled water). It was found that 0.25% solution i.e. with low saponins concentration, germination was maximum and in 1% solution i.e. with higher saponins concentration, germination was minimum. So from the results, it was concluded that saponins is a growth inhibitor, as it reduces the germination of seeds of pearl millet and sorghum.
