Genetic variation for yield and yield components in spring wheat Triticum aestivum L.

The experiment was conducted to determine the genetic variation for yield and yield components in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) at Sindh Agriculture University, Tandojam during 1998. Four cultivars of diverse heritage i.e., ZA- 77, Mehran-89, Yecora and Jauhar-78 were selected. ANOVA indicated that the genotypes of the both the populations significantly differed (P 0.01) for plant heights, number of tiller/plant, number of spikelets/spike, number of grains/spike and grain yield/ plant. The traits spike length and seed index showed significance at P0.05. The data regarding the heterotic performance revealed that the tallest plants (104.10 cm) were produced by ZA-77 x Mehran- 89 which showed positive MP heterosis Whereas, the shortest plants obtained in Yecora x Jauhar-78 (63.27 cm). The finding suggest that selection of these populations on the basis of high yielding potential can be made high heritability estimates towards the improvement of wheat. Quantitative pattern of inheritance particularly in three hybrids viz., Jauhar-78 x Mehran-89, its reciprocal and ZA-77 x Yecora displayed high heritability and genetic advancement. The combination also recorded remarkable heterotic and heterobeltiotic effects.
