Estimation of heterosis in Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L.)
1999
Rajput, R.R.
The experiment on estimation of heterosis in Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L.) was conducted at Agriculture Research Institute, Tandojam during 1998. Six F1 hybrids of B. juncea developed from three parental varieties crossed in complete diallel manner were evaluated for heterotic performance. The hybrids were compared with their parental varieties viz., RH-30, Early raya and S-9. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Mean squares show that both the populations of parents and their hybrids were significantly different at P0.01 for all the traits. Average performance of parents and their F1 hybrids revealed that the parent S-9 produced the tallest plant of 203 cm. The maximum branches per plant (17) were obtained in the cross of Early raya x S-9, its reciprocal cross-produced the highest (428) number of pods per plant. The parental variety Early raya flowered and matured earlier than all the other genotypes and it took 51-days to flowering and 106-days to maturity. RH-30 x Early raya showed the highest 1000 seed weight of 3.47 grams. However, the hybrid S-9 x RH-30 recorded remarkable seed yield of 25.30 grams per plant. The hybrid S- 9 x Early raya out yielded among all the hybrids and all the three hybrids were selected for high yielding.
