Role of EM treated sugarcane filter cake (SFC) in pond fisheries
2001
Naz, S.
The project "Role of Em treated sugarcane filter cake (SPC) in pond fisheries was conducted in two earthen ponds each having dimensions 22 x 7.5 x 1.8 m located at fisheries Research Farms, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. The pond 1 was treated with poultry manure while pond 2 was supplemented with Em treated sugarcane filter cake. Organic manures were supplied at rate of 0.1N of the wet fish body weight daily. Both the ponds were also fertilized with equal quantities (1:1) of Ammonium nitrate and single super phosphate. Fertilization both organic and inorganic was done fortnightly in both the ponds. After preliminary preparations, both of these ponds were stocked with Catla catla, Labeo rohita and Cirrinus mrigala in the ratio of 10:16:35 respectively. At the time of stocking the average body weights of three species in pond 1 were 291, 358 and 196g respectively whereas in ponds 2 average body weights were 275,358 and 183g respectively. The average for lengths at the time of stocking in pond 1 were 24, 25.7 and 20.5 cm whereas in pond 2 average fork lengths were 23.6, 25.3 and 21.3 cm respectively. The average total lengths of the three fish species at the time of stocking in pond 1 were 27.9, 28.5 and 23.3 cm whereas in pond 2 the average total length of three fish species were 27.0, 28.3 and 24.5 cm respectively. Netting of the two ponds was done on fortnightly intervals. Samples of each fish species from each pond were taken randomly and after recording the growth parameters i.e. body weight, total lengths and fork lengths, fishes were released back into the respective ponds. Water samples from both the ponds were taken fortnightly and analyzed for its physico-chemical characteristics. The data obtained was statistically analyzed. Using analysis of variance and correlation made the comparison of means. Under the above mentioned conditions the results obtained were as under: 1. Interpond differences were found to be non-significant except for salinity and chloride. 2. During the experimental study pH remained alkaline throughout. pH recorded in the experimental period remained close to the optimal standard recommended for fish. 3. Dissolved oxygen showed seasonal variations throughout the study period. 4. The water remained warm, alkaline, hard and saline for the whole study period. 5. In pond 1 with poultry manure the body weight grains were 210, 269 and 287 for catla catla, labeo rohita and Cirrhinus mrigala respectively. In pond 2 treated with Em treated sugarcane filter cake (SFC), the body weight grains were 222, 228 and 325g for Catla catla, Labeo rohita and Cirrhinus mrigala respectively. 6. Net fish yields/hectare/year (all the species together) in pond l and 2 were 3178.54 kg and 3036.810 respectively. Gross fish yields/hectare/year were 6846.48 and 6508.60 in pond l and pond 2 respectively. The overall nitrogen incorporation efficiency of ponds 1 and 2 were 3.20 and 3.07 respectively. Whereas feed conversion efficiency of pond l was 0.19 and pond 2 was 0.117 respectively.
