Influence of different nitrogen levels on productivity of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) under varying planting geometry

Investigation to study the influence of different nitrogen levels on productivity of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) under varying planting geometry were conducted at the Agronomic Research Area, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad during 2001. The experiment was laid out using randomized complete block design (RCBD) with split plot arrangement consisting of three replications, keeping a net plot size 7 x 2.4 m. The planting geometry i.e. flat sowing (40 cm apart), paired row planting (60/20 cm), ridge sowing (40 cm apart) and bed sowing (50/30 cm) and different nitrogen levels i.e. 0, 40 and 80 kg ha-1 were randomized in the main and sub plots, respectively. All other agronomic practices were kept normal and uniform. The various yield parameters of sesame such as number of capsules per plant, seed yield, biological yield and oil content were affected by varying planting geometry, while number of plant per square meter, plant height at maturity, leaf area index, number of seeds per capsule, 1000- seed weight and harvest index were affected non-significantly. All the growth and yield parameters were influenced significantly by different nitrogen levels. There was linear increase in seed yield with increasing rates of nitrogen application. Among nitrogen levels, N2 (80 kg ha-1) treatment gave maximum seed yield (0.79 t ha-1), followed by N1 (40 kg ha- 1) which produced 0.72 t ha-1 seed yield. Minimum seed yield (0.52 t ha-1) was obtained when no nitrogen was applied.
