Efficacy of pyrethroid insecticides against black cutworm Agrotis ipsilon Rott. (Noctuidae: Lepidoptera) on spinach crop

Experiment on chemical control of black cutworm (Agrotis ipsilon Rott.) was conducted at Agriculture Research Institute, Tandojam during 1998-99. Seeds of local Spinach variety were planted in a four replicated RCBD. Each replication comprised 11 rows of 5m long while row to row distance was 78 cm. Seven insecticides, namely Karate, Arrivo, Restox, Talastar, Mavrik, Baythroid and Sherpa were mixed with water and sprayed with the help of hand operated knapsack sprayer. The larval population counts were made one day before each spray, whereas post treatment population count was made after 24, 48, 72 hrs, and one and two weeks after treatment. It was found that all the insecticides were significantly effective in controlling black cutworm of Spinach in both the sprays. Among various insecticides tested, Talstar (2.5 EC) and Baythroid (5 EC) were more effective in controlling the pest in both the sprays. The results were statistically highly significant. Generally, Talastar and Baythroid found to be superior to all, the insecticides in controlling the pest.
