Physiology of source-sink relationship as affected by different levels of phosphorus in wheat

A field experiment was conducted at the Student's Farm, Department of Agronomy University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. The objective of the study was to evaluate and the impact of different levels of phosphorus on source- sink relationship in wheat. Randomized complete block design with 3 replications was used in the layout of the experiment. The Salient results of the study are summarized as under. i. Phosphorus application significantly decreased the leaf area index at tillering stage, however, remained unaffected at booting stage. ii. The number of tillers per unit area, leaf area duration, net assimilation rate, relative growth rate, green colour intensity of flag leaf and flag leaf area showed non- significant results with increase in phosphorus levels. iii. Grain filling duration decreased significantly with increase in phosphorus levels, whereas maximum brain filling, rate was obtained at 60 kg P2O5 ha-1 IV. Grain weight, grain yield, biological yield and harvest index remained unaffected by phosphorus application v. Grain phosphorus percentage was maximum at 60 kg P2O5 ha-1. Above this level it declined gradually while the grain nitrogen percentage was not affected by phosphorus application. It is concluded that although phosphorus has a remarkable role for wheat production including improvement of source-sink relationship, yet in our conditions it showed no significant role at higher levels.
