The insecticidal activity of crude extracts from sclerotia and mycelia of Aspergillus niger was tested against the corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis. The sclerotia were obtained by growing the fungus on a solid synthetic medium while the mycelia were grown by shake-flask fermentation and both were extracted with ethanol. Larval application of the crude extracts by spraying have shown a significant activity of sclerotial extract compared to the mycelial extract. The four concentrations of the extract revealed similar effects on the corn borer. Crude extract from sclerotia of A. niger can be used as an effective insecticide against O. furnacalis and is highly recommended for further isolation of the bioactive substance in its purified form and tested on corn insect pests
