Efficacy of different insecticides for the control of spotted bollworms Earias spp. on cotton

The present study on the efficacy of different insecticides for controlling spotted bollworms (Earias spp.) on cotton was carried out in the field of Kaleri village near Latif Experimental Farm, Sindh Agriculture University Tandojam. The cotton variety NIAB-78 was sown during third week of April 1999 in a randomized completely block design (RCBD) with four replicates. Each replicates comprised of five sub-plots and each sub plot size was of 5 X 15 m. Three pyrethroids (Karate, Baythroid, and Sherpa) and one mixture of pyrethroids and organophosphorus (Laser) were used twice with fortnight intervals. The reduction percentage in the population of spotted bollworms Earias spp. was computed by recording the observation on the population after one day, three day, seven day, and fourteen clay of each spray. Results show that pyrethroids (Baythroid) was more effective followed by Karate, Sherpa, and Laser. The Baythroid insecticide was comparatively more effective against spotted bolloworms than the other three evaluated products that are Karate, Laser and Sherpa. The control of Karate, Sherpa, and Laser insecticides was also at farmer acceptance level. Keeping in view the performance of these insecticides, the application of Baythroid and Karate at fortnightly intervals in recommended.
