Effect of different row spacings on the growth and yield of wheat

An experiment to investigate the effect of different row spacings on the growth and yield of wheat cultivar Inqilab was conducted at student's farm, department of Agronomy, Sindh Agriculture University, Tandojam, during Rabi season 1998-99. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with four replications with a plot size of 3m-2. The results had significant differences under influence of different row spacings for the parameters such as number of tillers/m2, seed yield/plot (g) and seed yield/ha (kg). The non-significant effects were recorded for the parameters such as, plant height (cm), number of spikelets/spike, number of grains/spike, grain weight/spike (g) and 1000 grain weight (g). The height plant height (75.5 cm) was recorded under row spacing 15 cm and followed by row spacing 30 cm with 74.2 cm. The lowest plant height (72.9 cm) was recorded under 22.5 cm row spacing. The highest (315.0) number of tillers/m- 2 was recorded in row spacing of 15 cm and lowest (253.7) number of tillers/m-2 was obtained in row spacing of 37.5 cm. The results revealed that row spacing of 15 cm had highest (16.9) number of spikelets/spike followed by 37.5 cm row spacing with 16.7 number of spikelets/spike. The lowest 15.0) number of spikelets/spike was recorded in row spacing of 22.5 cm the maximum number of grains/spike. (46.6) was recorded in 37.5 cm row spacing and minimum (41.39) number of grains/spike was recorded under row spacing of 22.5 cm. The highest grain-weight/spike (9.382) was recorded in 37.5 cm row spacing and lowest grain weight/spike (7.166 g) was recorded in row spacing of 22.5 cm. The highest (627.72 g) seed yield/plot was recorded in 15 cm. row spacing and lowest (423.3 g) seed yield/plot was obtained in row spacing of 22.5 cm. The highest (2040.0 Kg) result were obtained in 15 cm row spacing and lowest (1413.8 Kg) seed yield/ha was recorded under row spacing of 22.5 cm. The maximum (40.19 g) 1000 grain weight was obtained in row spacing of 37.5 cm and minimum (37.76 g) 1000 grain weight recorded under row spacing of 30 cm.
