Chemical weed control in barley (Hordeum vulgare)

The effect of two pre-emergence herbicides on weeds and barley was investigated at Agronomic Research Area, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad during 2000-2001. The experiment was laid out according to randomized complete block design having four replications and a net plot size of 1.0 x 7.0 m. Herbicides used were Terbutryn (Igran-500 FW) at the rate of 1.0 kg and 1.25 kg a.i ha-1 and Flurochloridone (Racer-25 CS) at the rate of 0.31 kg, 0.37 kg, 0.44 kg, 0.50 kg and 0.56 kg a.i. ha-1. The data collected were analyzed using appropriate statistical techniques. The results are summarized as under: Weed population was considerably reduced by pre- emergence Herbicides. Terbutryn (Igran-500 FW) at the rate of 1.0 kg a.i. ha-1 and Flurochloridone (Racer-25 CS) at the rate of 0.44 kg a.i. ha-1 gave maximum reduction in weed density (17.00 and 24.00 weeds m-1 respectively). Growth and yield parameters like number of spikelets per spike, number of grains per spike, 1000-grain weight, biological yield, grain yield, straw yield and harvest index showed significant response to various herbicides doses under study. Application of Flurochloridone (Racer-25 GS) at the rate of 0.44 kg a.i. ha-1 and Terbutryn (Igran-500 FW) at the rate of 1.0 kg /ha. ha-1 gave grain yield of 3585.75 and 3520 kg ha-1 respectively. The data further revealed that in general all herbicide application treatments exhibited superior performance in respect of growth and yield over control.
