Observation on oribatid mites as vectors of cestode parasites on pastures around Tandojam [Pakistan]

Parasitic infection occurs in animals especially in cattle, sheep and goats as, a result of poor management on scientific basis. The present study was under taken to have a complete and up-to-date knowledge regarding the prevalence and intensity of various species of cestodes infecting the animals, transmitted by the oribatids mites in the villages around the Tandojam. For this purpose 60 samples of soils were taken before sunrise from different places of different villages where the animals were seen for grazing. The soil samples were placed with on the gauze, kept in the simple funnel of tin have top diameter of 18 inches and trough capacity of 1 square foot. A 100 watt. electric bulb was suspended about 3 inches over the trough inducing downward migration of negatively phototrophic mites. In this way only the oribatids mites and other small invertebrates were recovered in the conical flask. Overall infective mites were found 147 from the 60 samples obtained from different places of pastures, grazing fields and pass ways of animals. From these samples only two species viz., Moniezia expansa and Moniezia benedeni were recovered which transmitted by these oribatids.
