Comparative yield and fibre characteristics of commercial cotton varieties under Tandojam conditions [Pakistan]

The study was evaluate the comparative yield and fibre characteristics of commercial cotton varieties. The experiment was carried out during Kharif season 2000, at Cotton Section Agriculture Research institute, Tandojam. Six upland cotton varieties such as Rehmani, Reshmi, Chandi-95, Niab-78, CRIS-9 and CIM-446 were studied. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four replications having a plot size 30 x 35. The parameters were recorded at the time of crop growth and maturity. The results for most of characters had statistically highly significant such as, plant height, number of branches/plant, number of bolls/plant, seed cotton yield per plant, staple length (mm), seed index seed cotton and seed cotton yield/hectare. However results for Ginning out turn percent (G.O.T%) showed non-significant response. All the varieties showed own response in different characters. The maximum plant height (137.6 cm) were observed in variety Chandi-95 followed by 135.9 cm with variety CRIS-9. The maximum number of sympodial branches/plant (20.55) was recorded under variety CRIS-9 followed by (18.94) under variety Chandi-95. The maximum number of bolls/plant (45.0) was recorded under variety CRIS-9 followed by (41.75) variety Chandi-55. The maximum seed cotton yield/plant (143.39) was recorded under (chandi-95 followed (141.70 g) under variety Rehmani. The maximum fibre staple length (29.95mm) was recorded under variety Reshmi followed by 2868 mm Chandi-95. The maximum ginning out-turn percent (G.O.T%) 35.65% was recorded under variety CIM-446 followed by 35.24% under variety Rehmani. The maximum weight of 100 seeds (8.72 g) was recorded under variety Reshmi followed by 8.85 g Rehmani. The maximum seed cotton yield kg/ha. 2280.56 kg was recorded under variety CRIS-9 followed by 2049.94 kg variety Chandi-95. However variety CRIS-9 and Chandi-95 showed best response in many qualitative and quantitative characters, Variety Reshmi showed positive response for staple length (29.95mm) and seed index i.e. 8.72 (g). While variety Rehmani and CIN-446 showed interior response in all the Characters seed cotton yield/plant and ginning outturn percent G.O.T%, (35.651) and (141.70 9). Variety Niab-78 showed negative response in all the characters as compared with other varieties.
