Effect of plant density on the growth and yield of soybean under agro-climatic conditions of Tandojam [Pakistan]

Bashir, M.A.
A field experiment was conducted to assess the influence of row and plant spacing combinations on the growth and yield of soybean, at Agriculture Research Institute, Tandojam during summer 1999. Six inter and intra row spacing combinations viz., 15x5, 15x10, 15x15, 22.5x5, 22.5x10 and 22.5x15 cm were evaluated against cultivar Bossier in four replicated randomized complete block design. Observations were recorded on growth, seed yield and its arrangements and subject to analysis of variance and least significant different test was applied to determine the superiority of treatment means. The results indicated that the growth, yield components and seed yield were highly significantly affected by row and plant spacing combinations under agro-climatic conditions of Tandojam. Plant height, number of branches/plant, number of pods/plant and seed index was observed. The maximum seed yield of Bossier was reported with closer row spacing i.e., 15x5 cm followed by next closer spacing. It is concluded that the row and plant spacing combinations of l5x5, 15x10 and 15x15 cm performed better seed yield under agro-climatic conditions of Tandojam.
