Manual and chemical fruit thinning in apple trees using Pomonit (NAA) or Etherel (etephon) reduced the number of fruit sets irrespectively of the treatment date. Urea did not reduce the number of fruit. Pomonit applied at date III (a week after the drop of petals) caused a decrease in the average weight of fruit. All the thinning methods reduced the total yield, with the exception of urea. However, the reduction effected by Etherel applied at dates II and III was non-significant. Manual thinning of fruit sets and the application of Ethrel at date I (full blooming) and II (end of blooming) favourably affected the percentage of large fruit in the total yield. The degree of fruit thinning, total yield, average fruit weight, and the percentage of large apples in the total yield being taken into consideration, the application of Etherel in period II can be regarded as the most favourable
