Genetic determinationof pig's carcass meat deposition and hypothesis of a major gene. Principles for the organization of selection on this criterion

An experimental design was implemented in five different breeds, all free from the halothane gene (n) in order to estimate the genetic determination on the meat deposition, obtained by measurement on carcass by UNIPORC. Firstly, the accuracy of backfat thickness (G1, G2) and LD muscle thickness (M2) measuring was estimated, 258 animals were individually identified and their whole loin was cut right between the 13th and the 14th rib. Genetic correlation beetween UNIPORC measurements and measurements on dissected carcass were 0.73, 0.82 and 0.77 for G1, G2 and M2, respectively. Secondly, heritabilities and additive genetic components of M2 were estimated on animals born between 1999 and 2000. In each line, number of records amounted from 4000 to 7500. With heritabilities between 0.29 and 0.36 and high additive genetic components, selection on the M2 will enable to achieve considerable genetic progress in conformation in the next few years in animals free of the halothane gene. With a more detailed analyses the data of particular distribution of M2 allows to suggest the existence of a new gene with major effect on carcass conformation. At present this suggestion can not be confirmed and further investigations are necessary
