The highest withaferin A content (700 microgram/g dry weight) was obtained in Withania somnifera shoots grown for 5 weels on NN medium supplemented with 0.0287 g ZnSO4/ l vs. 400 microgram withaferin A/g dry weight in the control culture. After 7 weeks the production was more than 20 percent of the control value suggesting some adaptation to Zn*[2+). The highest concentration of glutathione (900 microgram/g fresh weight = 13.5 mg/g dry weight) was with at 0.144 g ZnSO4/l. Under this conditions withaferin A accumulation was lower (200 microgram/g dry weight) ZnSO4 at 0.287 g/l inhibited of the plantlets
