Occurrence and distribution of Heterodera schachtii Schmidt 1871 and Heterodera avenae Wollenweber 1924 were found in the sugar beet growing areas of the Slovak Republic in 1999-2001. Total of 92 sugar beet fields and twelve sugar beet stocks were investigated in areas of six sugar-refineries (Dunajsk Streda, Rimavska Sobota, Sered, Surany, Trencianska Tepla and Trnava). Two species of Heterodera were identified in these localities - H. schachtii and H. avenae. In the sugar beet growing areas of Slovak Republic H. schachtii occurred in 10.9% of 92 sugar beet fields in low population densities 1-6 cysts in 500 g of soil samples, and in 25% of twelve sugar plant stocks. It was found mainly in the mixed population with H. avenae. Frequency of occurrence of H. avenae on sugar beet fields was 29.9%, with the population density 1-50 cysts in 500 g of soil
