Agricultural sources of CH4 emission and possibilities of their reduction in Slovakia
2002
Siska, B. | Igaz, D. (Slovenska Polnohospodarska Univ., Nitra (Slovak Republic))
The work reports on the sources of CH4 emissions in Slovak agriculture over a period covering 1990-2000. The evaluation is based on the data given in Statistical Yearbooks of the Slovak Republic and Reports on Agr¡culture and Food Industry in the Slovak Republic (Green Reports) issued by the Slovak Ministry of Industry. The sources of CH4 emissions were analysed according to IPCC methodology (Revised 1996 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories) and Emission Inventory Guidebook (1998). Emissions of CH4 are first of all affected by a number of farm animals. In the last decade their number has declined, which has the positive impact on CH4 emissions due to agricultural production. Total CH4 emissions decreased from 133,000 t in 1990 to 65,000 t in 1999, i.e. by 50% approximately. In conformity with Good Practice in Greenhouse Gases Inventory, it is also necessary to perform direct measurements of gases emissions in agriculture. These data have been absent in the conditions of Slovakia so far. The present study does not include CH4 emission by some categories of farm animals (e.g. fur-bearing animals)
