The yield potential of new potato varieties in irrigation conditions of south Slovakia

In 1996-1998 the issue of early potato yield potential has been investigated on medium-heavy, Calcarocaltic chernozem at the Experimental Station of Research Institute of Irrigation, Drainage and Landscape Engineering Bratislava in Most pri Bratislave for the purpose of determination of those early potato varieties that may be suitable for the irrigated areas of southern Slovakia. In the course of trials 17 varieties from very early up to medium early coming from both domestic and foreign assortment were included so as to represent the whole scale of irrigation period. The trials were conducted on two levels of irrigation regime - one of them utilising natural precipitation only and one of them with regulated irrigation. A positive influence of irrigation on early potato yields has been clearly proved by the trial, namely in years with deficiency of natural precipitation, when irrigation holds a dominant position in yield formation as well as in stabilising and increasing yields of this product. A variance analysis of results has been carried out wherein high significance of all investigated factors - year, irrigation and early potato variety has been detected. However irrigation and year influenced the early potato yields more. It can be deduced on the basis of average tuber yields in irrigated treatment, that a yield increase by 4.97 t.ha-1 has been achieved and therefore irrigation was a limiting factor throughout the whole 3 years' period. Very early and early varieties potato varieties have shown themselves to be suitable for growing under irrigation on medium-heavy, calcareous soil, where yields increased by 16.1 to 18.1%. The following potato varieties shown themselves to be the most suitable for growing under irrigation: Rosara, Karatop and Velox (very early); Ador, Nela, Livera and Planta (early); Lipta, Agria, Vila, Folva and Korela (medium early)
