Ionizing radiation induces chromosomal aberrations very effectively in all stages of the cell cycle. These aberrations can be easily detected and quantified in human peripheral blood lymphocytes. Circulating lymphocytes are in the dormant phase of the cell cycle; on exposure to radiation (as in the case of accidents), chromosome-type aberrations are induced immediately following exposure. The frequencies of induced aberrations are dose-related, therefore, they can be used as biological dosimeters in the case of radiation accidents.
