An experiment of spacing between rows with different heights of the foliar hedge and different yield levels was started in 1986 at the experimental vineyard of the Federal Agricultural Research Station of Changins at Pully (VD). At the same clusters number per vine, the increasing of the row spacing let to a strong decrease of the yield per square meter without improvement of the sugar content of the must. At the same yield level per square meter, the sugar content of the must decreases with increasing row spacing. The same observation was made for the total cane weight. The row spacing and the height of the foliar hedge have had only little effect on must and wine acidity parameters The sensory analysis performed on wines showed that the differences in qualities were week and seldom significant. Wines of the alternative with lowest row spacings (120 & 160 cm) tended to be slightly better appreciated than those of the alternatives with broader line spaces (200 & 240 cm).
