The harmfulness of the two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae in relation to various control strategies was studied on the early season strawberry variety Madeleine planted under plastic tunnels in the central Valais (CH). Acaricide applications during the fall of the planting year or during the next spring control the pest well. Despite visible leaf damage and populations reaching 120 individuals per leaf and pressures up to 3800 mite-days per leaf, the yield, the number and sugar content of fruits were not significantly affected. However, with the increasing mite pressure, fruit size of the first category and photosynthesis showed a decreasing trend. These results suggest that strawberry crops tolerate a relatively high mite pressure and create a renewed interest in biological control by means of predatory mites.
