The European tarnished plant bug, Lygus rugulipennis, damaged the field production of dwarf French bean seeds on an organic Farm of Western Switzerland. More than one third of the harvested seeds were severely deformed and germinated poorly. The study of the phenology and movement of the pest indicated that the first of its three generations developed in alfalfa rich prairies. The adults, attracted by the young pods, colonized thereafter the bean crops. Installation of insect proof netting over the crops was not effective and favoured diseases due to increased humidity. The best method was to produce the bean seeds under tunnel. Despite the wide ventilation openings, they were almost not colonized by the plant bug and the seeds were practically damage free.
