Spring, J.-L. (Agroscope RAC Changins, Station federale de recherches agronomiques, Pully (Switzerland). Centre viticole du Caudoz)
The effect of covering the soil with a sheet of aluminium reflecting the light and placed under the vine row has been studied during three years in a field experiment on the cultivar Gamay at the Swiss Federal Research Station of Changins, in Pully (VD). This practice has clearly improved the light microclimate in the canopy and in the bunch area. The thermal microclimate of the bunches during maturation has been only slightly influenced. No significant effect on vigour and fertility of the vine has been obtained. The berries had slightly more sugar content and less malic acid when soil was recovered with aluminium. No difference in the composition and taste of the wines could be obtained.
