Interception of solar radiation and photosynthesis by the canopy surface has been monitored from 1996 to 1998 at the Caudoz (Pully) experimental field of the Swiss Federal Research Station of Changins, for different interrow distances and heights of the foliar hedge. Raising the height of the vine hedgerow as well as decreasing the distance between rows resulted in an increase in the surface area of canopy exposed to direct sunlight. However, the lower leaves in adjacent rows suffered greater shade. The impact of shadow on photosynthetic activity of ageing basal leaves is weak towards the end of fruit ripening period. In the absence of water stress and with a saturated light, the maximum photosynthetic capacity of foliage was identical, independent of row spacing and hedgerow height.
