The major shortcoming of peat, the most frequently used substrate in massive nursery production of woody plant species throughout the world, is its high price, especially when nursery production in the countries with economy in trasition are concerned. The possibilities of substituting peat with artificial substrate exclusively from domestic resources have been researched in the experimental field of the Faculty of Forestry in Belgrade (Serbia&Montenegro). This paper discussed the properties of such a substrate, mixture of silica sand, earthworm manure and bark humus, named "Goc 1".
