Calcium is an essential macronutrient and constituent of bones, teeths and blood. It is necessary for construction of the bone mass and high calcium content in bones prevents fractures. Osteoporosis is a major health problem. Prevention of osteoporosis must start in childhood with adequate intake of calcium, together with proteins, phosphorus, vitamins D, B complex and K and magnesium. Regular intake of these nutrients must be maintained in adulthood, also. Ideal sources of calcium are milk and dairy products. A lot of questions, though, exist concerning adequate intake and sources of calcium. New data regarding adequate dietary intake show need for additional quantities comparing to previous recommendations (RDIs) since the number of young subjects with low bone mass is growing. Reason for this is found in bad dietary habits and lack of weight bearing physical activity.
