Heavy mechinery is used for the tillage of soil, application of fertilizers, pesticides, and harvest of crops. This has led to the damaging of soil structure and hence soil microbial activity itself. The aim of the investigation was to examine the effect of soil compaction on the microbial activity (total number of microorganisms, number of fungi, actinomycetes, azotobacter, ammonifiers, denitrifiers and dehydrogenase activity). The number of aerobic and neutrophylic microorganisms and dehydrogenase activity were higher in loose soil and the number of anaerobic microorganisms and fungi was higher in campacted soil.
