Extremely high temperatures in the spring and summer of 2003 caused a mass occurrence and reproduction of the cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera Hbn.). More or less severe outbreaks of this insect pest were reported throughout the Province of Vojvodina (northern part of Serbia&Montenegro). According to the flight dynamics of the cotton bollworm butterflies, at least three generations of this pest were present. The first one developed in late May and June, the second in July, and the third in August and early September. Its caterpillars caused greater or lesser damage to a number of cultivated plant species and weeds. The cotton bollworm can be controlled by cultural practice, biological and chemical measures. With chemical control, it is especially important that the first treatment is properly timed.
