The present paper is based on studies carried out with Pinus sylvestris growing in the dune field of Southwest Estonia on the transect about 1 km in length proceeding from the seaward foot to the top and down along the opposite slope of a dune. The study revealed a significant dependence of chlorophylls (Chla and Chlb) and carotenoids (Car) in the needles on the location of the site on the dune, on the concentration of N and Mg (nutrients regulating the pigments synthesis) in the soil and in needle tissues. Comparison of current-year and one-old needles suggests that the changes in environmental conditions and relief are reflected more strongly in the youngest needles. Regression analyses demonstrated that especially Chla depends significantly on the concentration of N and Mg in soil as well as in needles
