An experiment to evaluate the variation of maize leaf characters and their relation to yield, was conducted at the research station of Agriculture Faculty, Syiah Kuala University, Darussalam, Banda Aceh, from August 1999 to December 1999. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD). Nine maize varieties were tested in three replications. Variables measured were leaf width, number of leaf, leaf angle, leaf area index (LAI), leaf efficiency in grain production, and weight of grains per pod. The result of experiment indicated that there was no significant different among genotype of leaf characters except the weight of grain per pod rate. The heritability value of all variables spread between low and medium rate. Genotypic coefficient of variation values of all variables were narrow. Only leaf with had significant correlation with yield.
