Increasing urbanization has led to the mounting problem of disposal of municipal solid waste. So far, most of it was being used for land-filling, but with the scarcity of land near urban areas, alternative methods of disposal have come to limelight. Of the various methods devised, aerobic microbial digestion in the easiest and least energy intensive. The product of this digestion or composting is organic manure, which is very useful for agriculture as it increases the organic-content and Humus of the soil which is getting depleted by the indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizers. Also, the beneficial microbes present in the compost are essential for increasing the fertility of the agricultural soil. Thus 'wealth from waste' is a reality, reducing environmental pollution in the municipal areas.
