The sublethal ischemia-reperfusion stress such as ischemic preconditioning have effects on the endogenous superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and the its mRNA expression. In rats, the SOD activity and contents in skeletal muscle changes with aging. Rats starts the sexually mature at 6 weeks but do not achieve full maturity until 12 to 15 months. This study is to aim to observe the relationship between the expression of SOD mRNA and apoptosis at 24 hours reperfusion after 2 hour and 4 hour ischemia with preconditioning or without preconditioning in rat rectus femoris muscle aging 6 weeks, 12 weeks and 12 months.
