Participatory research program on maize and rice in the western hills of Nepal

With the aim of identifying and verifying the technologies over a wider range of environments Agriculture Research Station, Lumle conducted various outreach research activities on maize and rice in its Research Command Areas (RCA) of western region during the 1999 and 2000 summer seasons. The potential promising maize genotypes identified and preferred by the mid and high hills farmers for normal season were White hill pool, Yellow hill pool, Ganesh 2 and Manakamana 1 due to their high grain yield, medium maturity period and stay green character suitable for livestock fodder/forage. Similarly Arun 1 and Arun 2 were still found popular as sppring season maize varieties among the farmers due to their earliness, resistance to lodging, desirable plant height and highgrit recovery
