A method to estimate the aboveground carbon stocks in a Natural Protected Area (La Malinche Volcano National Park, LMVNP, of 45,711 ha extent) was developed and applied in Central Mexico. Aerial photographs from the year 2001 (at 1:25,000 scale) were photo interpreted. Polygon delineations for each vegetation community were corrected by applying a digital photogrammetric procedure using a digital terrain model (a DTM with a spatial resolution of 20 m) within a GIS environment. Calibration parameters of the camera used to obtain the photographs were applied in order to fulfill the on-line Photogrammetric procedure. Vegetation cover polygons were classified to obtain the land use and cover map. In the phase of fieldwork a stratified sampling procedure was applied according to the extent of each vegetation class determined in the photointerpretation step. A forest inventory using simple dasonomic measurements was applied in thirteen 1-ha sampling sites. Each sampling site was constituted by ten 0.1-ha circles drawing up two rows of five circles perpendicular to their corresponding hillslope. With this procedure, the following variables were quantified : Diameter at Breast Height (DBH), Total Tree Height and Lower Branches Height. Biomass volume per vegetation genera according to the following two diameter classes: a) =10 cm DBH and b) 10 cm DBH, was then calculated. Biomass amounts per genera and diametric class were transformed to tons of carbon per hectare using the standard reference of IPCC in 1995. Results are presented according to: 1. the specific biomass amount per genera/diametric class; 2. carbon stocks (tons/ha) and biomass amounts using the six classes of forest type defined; and finally, 3. a carbon sequestration map per polygon of vegetation community of the LMVNP. Results suggest that Pine-Oak and Oak-Pine together had the major carbon content (42%) with an extent of 22% of the study area
