The genetic variation of native horses (Equus caballus Linn.) ages 10-11 yr from three localities of Laguna, Philippines (Mabitac, Nagcarlan and Alaminos) was measured using serum proteins and isozymes. Starch-gel electrophoresis of 100 native horses revealed that except for Acph, with one genotype (AA), all the seven loci, namely, transferrin (Trf), with six genotypes (AA, BB, CC, AB, AC, BC), alkaline phosphatase (Alph) with three genotypes (AA, AB, BB), albumin (Alb) with three genotypes (AA, AB, BB), acid phosphatase 2, Acph2 with three genotypes (AA, AB, BB), and three loci for esterase (Est1, Est2, Est3) each with three genotype (AA, AB, BB) were polymorphic. Heterozygosity (H) value ranged from 42.3%-71.5%. The proportion of polymorphic loci (P) was found to be the same for each of the populations with a value of 87.5%, and the average number of alleles (A) ranged from 1.0 to 1.39. Genetic variability was highest in Alaminos and lowest in Mabitac. The horse populations of Mabitac and Nagcarlan showed the highest degree of relatedness and, hence, shared the most common alleles as indicated by the highest genetic identity value (I) of 0.9247, while the populations of Alaminos and Mabitac had the lowest genetic similarity based on Nei's genetic distance
