Seedling emergence at 7 and 10 DAS [days after seeding], and number of tillers were slightly affected by the seeding methods where the manually drawn seeder had higher emergence than the handtractor [HT]-drawn seeder. The latter placed seeds deeper particularly when seeds fell where the paddy wheel passed, which resulted in poor germination. In some farms, low germination was compensated with more tillers. Higher yield and net income were obtained from the manually drawn seeder than from the HT-drawn seeder and hand broadcast. Production costs varied with the kind and amount of fertilizer, cost of labor in spraying, fertilizer application, harvesting, threshing, hauling, drying, and selling price. Farmers preferred the manually drawn seeder to the HT-drawn seeder because the former does not need fuel, while the latter is expensive and is not even commonly used in the locality
